Since each rigid-flex PCB product is designed with areas of different materials and different layers. Rigid regions may be more than flexible regions and are converted from FR-4 to polyimide using raw materials.
Complex designs often go from rigid to flexible and back to rigid multiple times. As these intersections occur, the overlap of rigid-flex materials requires that all pores be moved away from the transition zone to maintain integrity. Additionally, many rigid-flex designs include stainless steel sheet stiffeners or aluminum stiffeners to provide additional support for connectors and components.
It is also possible to mount the product's components, connectors and chassis to rigid sections with higher rigidity. Flex circuits are used only as interconnects, while reducing mass and improving vibration resistance.
When designing a rigid-flex PCB, consider the electromechanical factors that affect flex circuits and rigid boards. When building your design, pay attention to the ratio of bend radius to thickness. For flexible circuits, tight bends or increased thickness in the flex area can increase the chance of failure. Is it possible to keep the bend radius at least ten times the thickness of the flex circuit material, should avoid stretching the flex circuit along the outer bend or compressing it along the inner bend. Increasing the bend angle beyond 90° increases tension at one point and compression at another point on the flex circuit. Also the flex circuit has some flex lines that affect the wiring. Components or vias cannot be placed close to the flex circuit due to potential material stress.
